FRAN 209 FRENCH GRAMMAR [3]

This course is intended for students who completed basic French courses. Its aim is to enhance their ability to analyze logical French sentences and to understand grammatical relations and meaning between the components and the structure of sentences.

FRAN 211 FRENCH CONVERSATION [3]

The objective of this course is to develop basic ground of French listening and speaking and to enhance French communication skills through various exercises.

FRAN 213 TRANSLATED FRENCH LITERATURE [3]

The Translated French literature course is intended for students who approach French literature for the first time. French literature works translated in Korean will be read together and various discussions about the main issues will be conducted. Since this course helps students to familiarize with the general tendencies of French literature and its characteristics by period, it will provide the basic ground for related major courses.

FRAN 215 INTENSIVE FRENCH [3]

This course is intended for students who have not learned French in high school or as first year college students. Its aim is to give students a basic knowledge for understanding and mastering French language in a very short time by teaching French grammar and expressions intensively.

FRAN 224 INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH STUDIES [3]

This course aims at providing global knowledge and understanding of France in general: French culture, arts, society, history, etc., thus allowing students to acquire basic knowledge for the courses of the department of French language and literature.

FRAN 226 READING FRENCH TEXTS [3]

This course aims to enhance reading skills of texts related to the major courses of the Department of French language and literature. In this course the students will practice reading and study the exact meaning of various French texts from press articles to basic texts about literature and humanities.

FRAN 228 FRENCH WRITING [3]

This course provides basic skills for French grammar and French writing by analyzing and writing documents used in real life for every type of text.

FRAN 231 INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH LITERATURE [3 Credits]

This course covers basic knowledge in french literature in general, which is provided basically for freshmen. The course focuses on important writers, literary works, historical events, etc.

FRAN 232 READING BASIC FRENCH TEXTS [3]

This course is for freshman year. The students will be provided with various french texts such as letters, comic books, essays, and proses. By taking this course, students are expected to learn french vocabulary, phrases, and grammar, and to enhance their language skills for advanced courses.

FRAN 233 UNDERSTANDING FRENCH LANGUAGE [3]

This course aims at providing basic knowledge about the status and specificity of french as a language for freshmen students. The students will learn in general about french history, geography, and culture.

FRAN 234 INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH HISTORY AND CULTURE [3]

This course aims at understanding the current state of France, by focusing on french history, art (painting, music, architectures, etc.), and other aspects such as social institutions and law. The course is provided for freshmen.

FRAN 308 UNDERSTANDING OF FRENCH LINGUISTICS [3]

This course aims to improve the general understanding of French linguistics and to give students a methodical overview of French language by analyzing recent research trends on French linguistics and its history.

FRAN 333 BUSINESS FRENCH [3]

This course aims at improving speaking and writing skills at the same time. Focus will be put on learning real life vocabulary and expressions used in practical business.

FRAN 335 FRENCH LITERATURE HISTORY I [3]

This course will focus on the study of French literature’s development through its particularities and its chronology by introducing representative authors and works of classic French literature, from Medieval to modern time.

FRAN 337 FRENCH-KOREAN CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS [3]

This course will look at French literary and/or humanities-oriented texts, studying the specific features of both French and Korean languages through translation. Emphasis will be put on lexical and syntax issues found in Korean translations of French texts, as well as on cultural differences.

FRAN 339 FRENCH POETRY AND TRANSLATION [3]

This course will look in details the different parts one needs to consider when translating French poetry: prosody, poem forms, rhythm and intonation, and historical background. By comparing and analyzing existing translations, the students will have an opportunity to ponder on the relations between translation and their mother tongue.

FRAN 340 FRENCH LITERATURE HISTORY II [3]

In this course the students will analyze the transition process in the history of French literature, especially from the post-modern era. We will also try to capture the identity and universality of French literature through the study of the main literary trends.

FRAN 342 LITERARY TRANSLATION [3]

This course aims at analyzing the many difficulties that may appear when translating literary texts such as poems, plays, novels, etc. by comparing the original text in French and its previous Korean translations. By looking at texts on translation related to literature, the students will analyze the differences between the source text and the target text, and they will also observe the various causes of errors which frequently occur in the process of translation and seek alternatives.

FRAN 343 CHILDREN'S LITERATURE TRANSLATION [3]

This course will firstly emphasize the particularities of translating texts designed for a public of a specific age such as fables, folk and fairy tales, teen novels etc. The students will widen their understanding of Children’s literature translation through the analysis and examination of existing translations.

FRAN 344 FRENCH TRANSLATION PRACTICE [3]

In this course, students will actually translate various types of French texts into Korean, thus strengthening their ability to translate. In addition, over the course of these translation exercises, reading skills of texts in French will also be enhanced.

FRAN 345 FRENCH LANGUAGE AND MEDIA [3]

The objective of this course is to familiarize the students with practical French used in everyday life and to apply their language skills through articles and videos of various French media such as newspapers, broadcasts, Internet, etc.

FRAN 346 FRENCH GRAMMAR- ADVANCED LEVEL [3]

In this course the students will acquire the grammar knowledge required to understand and analyze advanced level French texts such as literary texts. Its aim is also to give students the ability to recognize the nuances in French sentences and expressions.

FRAN 347 FRENCH-SPEAKING LITERATURE [3]

This course aims at providing an understanding of literary works by major authors from countries belonging to the Francophonie such as Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, several African countries. While analyzing French-speaking countries’ reception of French literature, the differences and similarities between French literature and Francophonic literature, the course will hopefully deepen the understanding of both the universality and differentiality of literature.

FRAN 348 READING FRENCH HUMANITIES TEXTS [3]

In this course the students will read French texts from the fields of linguistics, history, philosophy, literature, etc. This course aims at enhancing the students’ understanding not only of French most important thinkers in the various fields of humanities, but also to improve their general understanding of humanities as well.

FRAN 349 UNDERSTANDING OF TRANSLATION [3]

This course will focus on introducing the basic theories of translation studies. While reading translated texts, the students will focus on analyzing whether translation theories are being applied, and if so whether the translated text reveals flaws in the theory it is supposed to rely on or not.

FRAN 350 FRENCH NOVEL AND TRANSLATION [3]

This course will look in details the different parts one needs to consider when translating French novels (the narrative structure, description of the characters, space and time, narrative tone and point of view) by comparing and analyzing previous translations.

FRAN 351 UNDERSTANDING FRENCH POETRY [3]

This course will introduce to the structure and characteristics of French poetry, the process of its evolution throughout history and it will hopefully help the students develop a critical eye to understand poetry by reading poems by representative French poets of each period.

FRAN 352 FRANCOPHONE LANGUAGES AND CULTURES [3]

This course aims at understanding languages and cultures of each Francophone regions and countries, especially languages and cultures of areas directly influenced by France such as Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, etc.

FRAN 353 FRENCH PLAYS AND SCENARIOS [3]

This course will approach playwright's works and French film scenarios ranging from medieval to modern times. Students will be able to grasp the tradition and characteristics of French theatre, and to understand the various issues linked to actual performances and modernity.

FRAN 354 FRENCH NOVELS AND WRITERS [3]

In this course the students will be doing intensive readings of works by authors representative of each important period in French Literature history, and they will also develop the skill to approach critically the study of these writers by examining all the components of the novels and their theoretical outlines.

FRAN 355 FRENCH LANGUAGE AND THE HISTORY OF FRANCE [3]

This course will focus on the birth of French language and the process of its development and will examine the characteristics of French language for each period and its representative literature works. And for each period of French language the main history facts will be explained.

FRAN 356 FRENCH CONTEMPORARY POETRY [3]

In this course the students will study the evolution of French poetry in the 19th and 20th centuries, from romanticism to symbolism to surrealism. Though the reading and critical analysis of works by several poets such as Lamartine, Hugo, Baudelaire, Rimbault, Mallarmé, Apollinaire, etc., the students will hopefully be able to grasp the flow of French contemporary poetry.

FRAN 357 FRENCH CONTEMPORARY NOVELS [3]

This course will cover the long flow of the history of French novels. The students will study the various structures of narration in French novels through analysis and intensive reading of important works by novelists such as Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, Proust, Sartre, Camus, Robbe-Grillet, Tournier, etc.

FRAN 359 THE FRENCH CULTURAL INDUSTRY [3]

The lecture on the <French Culture Industry> deals with the overall knowledge of French culture and arts and French methodology of treating them as an industry. This course mainly focuses on not only extensive understanding of the French cultural industry, but also the orientation to cultivating men of talent for convergence education.

FRAN 427 FRENCH TEACHING CURRICULUM [3]

This course is designed to introduce students who have advanced language skills to the formal study of a representative body of literary texts in French. This program is an introduction to works of prose, poetry and drama from different periods.

FRAN 428 STUDY AND METHOD OF GUIDANCE FOR FRENCH TEACHING MATERIALS [3]

The principal objective of this course is to give students a professional knowledge about the structure and the contents of French teaching materials indispensable to the learning of a foreign language. The students will study how to make a good use of various auxiliary textbooks, reference documents in order to get familiarized with effective learning theories.

FRAN 431 TRANSLATION AND COMPOSITION [3]

This course will train students to write logically and teach them to read texts analytically, as well as introduce them to translation writing.

FRAN 433 PRAGMATIC TEXT TRANSLATION [3]

While doing actual translations of various texts, the students will be able to improve their basic French reading skills and become aware of the difference with a literary text’s translation. The course will also focus on the problems met when translating pragmatic or specialized texts aside from the ability to properly transmit the information.

FRAN 435 FRENCH LITERATURE AND CRITICISM [3]

This course will cover the main trends and schools of French literature, and it will also deal with the issues of intertextuality, re-writing, imitation and creation that can be found in literary works by various authors.

FRAN 436 FRENCH CLASSICAL POETRY [3]

Through the analysis of works by poets from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Classical periods, this course will emphasize the signs of poetic practice and their diversity. While looking at traditional poetry’s subjects such as 'love', 'death', 'destiny', 'despair', etc. this course will try to determine how the ‘tradition’ of medieval, Pleiades, baroque and classical poetry acted on modern poetry.

FRAN 437 PRACTICAL FRENCH COMPOSITION [3]

In this course the students will experience the difference in the art of expression between Korean and French through detailed practical texts. Through translation exercises into French of various texts such as novels, essays, newspaper articles, letters, the students will also develop his translating competence.

FRAN 438 FRENCH CLASSICAL PROSE [3]

Through the analysis of works written in prose from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, this course aims at helping students understand the continuity of French classical prose. By reading works by authors representative of each period, this course will also focus on analyzing the similarities and differences between classical prose and classical poetry in France.

FRAN 440 TRANSLATION ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION [3]

This course will focus firstly on the main issues and criteria to consider in translation quality assessment, and it will also study the publishing process of translations.

FRAN 442 HISTORY AND CULTURE OF TRANSLATION [3]

This course aims at widening the understanding of the culture of translation as well as the translation of culture by outlining the history of Western translation. In addition, this course will emphasize the history of literary translation by introducing the history of Western literature’s introduction in Korea.

FRAN 444 THE REALITY OF KOREAN-FRENCH TRANSLATION [3]

This course aims at improving the ability to translate Korean texts into French, by performing practical translation exercise.

FRAN 448 FRENCH LITERATURE AND COMPARATIVE LITERATURE [3]

This course will approach through comparative literature French poetry, French novels, French theatre by comparing them with literary works from other parts of the world. While emphasizing the specificity of each country’s literature, this course will also give students an opportunity to ponder on the reception of French literature in Korea.

FRAN 450 FRENCH IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS [3]

This course aims at giving students the skills to understand the particularities of French language when used as a diplomatic official language and to master related expressions practically by reading articles extracted from various diplomatics texts, French newspapers or magazines, etc.
